Synod

The Synod on Synodality is a three-year process of listening and dialogue beginning with a solemn opening in Rome on October 9 and 10, 2021 with each individual diocese and church celebrating the following week on October 17. The synodal process will conclude in 2024. 


Pope Francis invites the entire Church to reflect on a theme that is decisive for its life and mission: “It is precisely this path of synodality which God expects of the Church of the third millennium.” This journey, which follows in the wake of the Church’s “renewal” proposed by the Second Vatican Council, is both a gift and a task: by journeying together and reflecting together on the journey that has been made, the Church will be able to learn through Her experience which processes can help Her to live communion, to achieve participation, to open Herself to mission.

El Sínodo sobre la Sinodalidad es un proceso de escucha y diálogo de tres años que comienza con una apertura solemne en Roma los días 9 y 10 de octubre de 2021 y cada diócesis e iglesia celebrará la semana siguiente, el 17 de octubre. El proceso sinodal concluirá en 2024.


El Papa Francisco invita a toda la Iglesia a reflexionar sobre un tema decisivo para su vida y misión: “Es precisamente este camino de sinodalidad lo que Dios espera de la Iglesia del tercer milenio”. Este camino, que sigue la estela de la “renovación” de la Iglesia propuesta por el Concilio Vaticano II, es a la vez un don y una tarea: caminando juntos y reflexionando juntos sobre el camino recorrido, la Iglesia podrá aprender a través de Su experiencia qué procesos pueden ayudarla a vivir la comunión, a lograr la participación, a abrirse a la misión.

What Next?

2024:

The members of the Ordinary Council of the Synod of Bishops adopted a Document for the work to be engaged by the Catholic Church until the celebration of the Second Session of the XVI Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops (October 2024).

 
These are guidelines with a concrete roadmap in which the deepening of synodality in a missionary perspective and the broadening of experiences of synodality at the local level are the cornerstones on which the local communities are called to reflect, beginning with the Synthesis Report adopted at the end of the First Session of the XVI Assembly on 28 October.

What is the Synod?

2021:

The entire Catholic Church is called to participate in the upcoming Synod of Bishops! The upcoming Synod is entitled: “For a Synodal Church: Communion, Participation, and Mission.” 


Synod is a greek word (synodos) meaning a meeting or assembly. The two Greek words that make up Synod are syn meaning together and hodos meaning way or journey. 


Pope Francis has called the entire People of God to journey together! This Synod is not just another meeting with oral presentations and written reports. This Synod is a process of journeying together. As the Church, we will listen to each other, dialogue with each other, pray together, discern together and make decisions together for the purpose of proclaiming the Gospel of Jesus Christ to the world! 


Pope Francis is asking each local diocese to gather together - clergy, religious and laity- to first listen to each other’s joys and hopes, and griefs and anxieties (c.f. Gaudium et Spes no. 1). After we listen to each other, we are called to dialogue together on ways we can accompany each other as we seek to grow in holiness. Listening and speaking within the Church always involves prayer. We are listening, dialoguing and praying together so that we can hear the voice of the Holy Spirit. The “goal” of this journeying together is not to create a new vision or pastoral plan with objectives. Rather, the goal of our journeying together is to be present with one another, to listen and learn with each other, and to grow closer to the Lord and His Church.

This pivotal document is the culmination of ten months of intentional listening throughout the Church in the U.S.

  • 2022 Presentation - Listening Sessions Summary

    A HUGE THANK YOU to our parish family and all the participants who journeyed with us in our Synod listening sessions that took place in early 2022. During those sessions, we were asked by the Vatican to ask the same set of questions to all participants - a set of questions that were universally asked worldwide.


    We are grateful for your patience in waiting for the summary of the responses from our sessions. Below is a brief list of topics brought up during the sessions (click here for the full summary).



    Question 1: Listening & Journeying - A synodal Church, in announcing the Gospel, “journeys together.” 

    • Be more welcoming at Mass with the revival of “Name Tag Sundays” and birthday/anniversary acknowledgements before Masses. 

     

    Question 2: Listening to All of God’s People - Intentionally listen to the voices that are in our midst including those voices on the peripheries. 

    • Need more youth activities such as Music, Mass, prayer, activities. 

     

    Question 3: Listening & Inviting - Listening to those persons who currently share their gifts in our parish ministries. (Liturgical ministries, outreach to the homebound, religious education, and services to the poor.)  

    • Make ministries more visible to parishioners and follow up with them when they show interest.  

     

    Question 4: Listening & Connecting - Listening & Connecting our diocese.  

    • Neighboring parishes should share ideas and resources such as musicians, guest speakers, sporting events, movie nights, workshops and retreats, etc.

    Question 5: Listening to the Holy Spirit to grow in our “journeying together.”  

    • We need to emphasize and teach how to strengthen the “Church in the Home.”

¿Qué es el Sínodo?

2021:

¡Toda la Iglesia Católica está llamada a participar en el próximo Sínodo de los Obispos! El próximo Sínodo se titula: “Por una Iglesia sinodal: comunión, participación y misión”.

 

Sínodo es una palabra griega (synodos) que significa reunión o asamblea. Las dos palabras griegas que componen Sínodo son syn, que significa juntos, y hodos, que significa camino o viaje.

 

¡El Papa Francisco ha llamado a todo el Pueblo de Dios a caminar juntos! Este Sínodo no es una reunión más con presentaciones orales e informes escritos. Este Sínodo es un proceso de caminar juntos. Como Iglesia, nos escucharemos unos a otros, dialogaremos unos con otros, oraremos juntos, discerniremos juntos y tomaremos decisiones juntos con el propósito de proclamar el Evangelio de Jesucristo al mundo.

 

El Papa Francisco está pidiendo a cada diócesis local que se reúna (clero, religiosos y laicos) para escuchar primero las alegrías y esperanzas de los demás, y las penas y ansiedades (cf. Gaudium et Spes no. 1). Después de escucharnos unos a otros, estamos llamados a dialogar juntos sobre las formas en que podemos acompañarnos mientras buscamos crecer en santidad. Escuchar y hablar dentro de la Iglesia implica siempre oración. Estamos escuchando, dialogando y orando juntos para que podamos escuchar la voz del Espíritu Santo. El “objetivo” de este caminar juntos no es crear una nueva visión o proyecto pastoral con objetivos. Más bien, el objetivo de nuestro caminar juntos es estar presentes unos con otros, escuchar y aprender unos con otros, y acercarnos más al Señor ya Su Iglesia.

    Queridas hermanas, queridos hermanos:


    “Todos nosotros hemos sido bautizados por el Espíritu Santo para formar un solo cuerpo” (1Cor 12,13). Es la experiencia, llena de gratitud, que hemos realizado en esta Primera Sesión de la Asamblea sinodal, celebrada del 4 al 28 de octubre del 2023, sobre el tema “Por una Iglesia Sinodal: comunión, participación y misión. Por la gracia común del Bautismo, hemos podido vivir juntos, con un corazón y una sola alma, no obstante, la diversidad de proveniencias, lenguas y culturas. Como en un coro, hemos buscado cantar con variedad de voces y en la unidad de nuestros corazones. El Espíritu Santo nos ha concedido experimentar la armonía que solo Él puede originar: una armonía que es don y testimonio en un mundo herido y dividido.

  • 2022 Presentation -Escuchando las sesiones Resumen

    MUCHAS GRACIAS a nuestra familia parroquial y a todos los participantes que viajaron con nosotros en nuestras sesiones de escucha del Sínodo que tuvieron lugar a principios de 2022. Durante esas sesiones, el Vaticano nos pidió que hiciéramos el mismo conjunto de preguntas a todos los participantes: un conjunto de preguntas que se formularon universalmente en todo el mundo (haga clic aquí para ver el resumen completo). 


    Agradecemos su paciencia a la espera del resumen de las respuestas de nuestras sesiones. A continuación, se muestra una breve lista de los temas abordados durante las sesiones.


    Pregunta 1: Escuchar y caminar - Una Iglesia sinodal, al anunciar el Evangelio, “camina juntos”.

    • Sea más acogedor en la Misa con el resurgimiento de los “Domingos de etiquetas con nombres” y reconocimientos de cumpleaños/aniversario antes de las Misas.

    Pregunta 2: Escuchar a todo el Pueblo de Dios - Escuche intencionalmente las voces que están entre nosotros, incluidas las voces de las periferias.

    • Necesitamos más actividades para jóvenes como música, misa, oración, actividades.

    Pregunta 3: Escuchar e invitar - Escuchar a aquellas personas que actualmente comparten sus dones en nuestros ministerios parroquiales. (Ministerios litúrgicos, asistencia a los confinados en sus hogares, educación religiosa y servicios a los pobres).

    • Hacer que los ministerios sean más visibles para los feligreses y hacer un seguimiento con ellos cuando muestren interés.

    Pregunta 4: Escuchar y conectar - Escuchar y conectar nuestra diócesis.

    • Las parroquias vecinas deben compartir ideas y recursos como músicos, oradores invitados, eventos deportivos, noches de cine, talleres y retiros, etc.

    Pregunta 5: Escuchar al Espíritu Santo para crecer en nuestro “caminar juntos.”

    • Necesitamos enfatizar y enseñar cómo fortalecer la “Iglesia en el Hogar”.
